Appreciating those who Help Girls Lead

April 4, 2016

Volunteer Month

By Katie Taylor, Volunteer Experience Director

Behind the badges, the cookie sales, the overnight camping trips, the weekly activities, the smiles and the lifelong memories, stand our devoted volunteers. From waiting in a blizzard for a cookie delivery to volunteering in multiple roles to continuing to serve years after their own daughters have aged out of Girl Scouts, volunteers do whatever it takes to give girls the gift of Girl Scouting – and we are so grateful!

It’s not uncommon for our volunteers to juggle multiple roles as many are parents, hold full-time or part-time jobs, support their religious institutions, give time to their communities, and serve in the military. And they can still find the time, energy, and resources to give to Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines!

Meet Sara – a mother, career woman, co-leader of two troops, and service unit manager volunteer.  Sara continues to welcome new girls to her Cadette troop because she “just can’t say no to a girl who wants to do Girl Scouts!”

Girl Scout Cadettes – Camille, Arianna, and Nicole – say they have learned so much from their leaders, including Sara, and shared, “they teach [us] how to lead, and let [us] lead by [ourselves]…. They challenge [us], but always show they care.”

Providing a girl-led experience is essential to the Girl Scouts leadership development program.  Girl Scout volunteers are true role models for leadership and provide girls the opportunity to make decisions for the troop, ultimately helping girls develop interpersonal and leadership skills. How awesome is that?!

And Cynthia, long-time Girl Scout volunteer and Brownie Troop leader, shares, “Girl Scouts helps girls find their voice.” One of her Girl Scouts, Hailey, shares when she was working on her Mystery Detective badge that “sometimes I get ahead of myself, and my troop leader slows me down to think about it.”

Amazing, right?! Even our younger girls can recognize and articulate the learning experience the Girl Scout program offers them, and how important volunteers are to their experience. Without the contributions of volunteers like Sara and Cynthia, so many of our girls would cease to have the opportunity to find their voice.

On behalf of Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines, I want to thank each and every one of our awesome volunteers.  Our hearts are full of gratitude for the women and men who selflessly give to our girls and the entire Girl Scout Movement. With volunteers by their side, there is no limit to what our girls experience and achieve in Girl Scouts and beyond.

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month!
