5 Reasons to be a Media Girl

Are you a passionate Girl Scout advocate that likes to share her experiences with others? Do you LOVE the spotlight? When you grow up, do you want to be on the news or working in social media? Then we have a job for you, Girl Scout!

We are now accepting applications for our 2019-20 Media Girlz team! This is a year-long position available to rising Girl Scout Juniors-Ambassadors. We will select 15 girls  based on knowledge of the Girl Scout program, public speaking abilities, and diversity in age and location. Girls chosen will have the opportunity to participate in various media opportunities and unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader) through new experiences!

Interested in learning more? Check out these five awesome things that our Media Girlz got to do this year, and apply here by May 26th, 2019!

  1. Media training

The Girl Scouts kicked off their Media Girlz term with a fun workshop at Camp Mary Atkinson where we learned all about the social, broadcast, and print media. We practiced interviewing each other and discussed tips and tricks to avoid being nervous and shine in front of the camera!

2. News and Radio Interviews

During the 2019 Cookie Program, a few of our Media Girlz had the opportunity to visit news and radio stations to give their communities the low down on cookies! The girls shared all of the skills they have learned by selling cookies and talked about how they have used their proceeds. How cool is that?

3. Social Media Videos

Media Girlz love to be creative, and this year, our girls made awesome videos that were posted on our Instagram and Facebook pages. They got to provide their fellow Girl Scouts with all of the details necessary to excel during the Fall Product and Cookie Program and shared their stories about camp and volunteers that were special to them. Check out Loreta’s recruitment video here!

4. A studio tour of ABC 11.

We adventured to WTVD in Durham to learn all about broadcast journalism and how news is gathered and delivered! Our tour was led by Anchor (and Girl Scout alum!) Tisha Powell! We got to see how a green screen works and watch the news being filmed! Read all about it here.

5. Council Blog Posts

The Media Girlz channeled their inner innovator to write blog posts just like this one! Through their blogs, they discussed their Media Girlz experiences, program events, and more. Their blogs were shared with readers across our 41 counties– wow! Check out Caraline’s blog here!
