The afternoon of Sunday, July 15, 2018, Girl Scouts from across our council checked-in for a summer STEM adventure with Girl Scout Summer Science Camp 2018! Girl Scout Summer Science Camp is a week-long program that is held annually at Meredith College, and provides 60 Girl Scout Cadettes and Seniors with the opportunity to strengthen their STEM skills by engaging with female STEM experts and participating in activities like building robots, creating their own perfume, and so much more!
Each day, the girls chose from a variety of activities led by experts in all things STEM! In one session, Girl Scouts learned all about physiology, the branch of biology that focuses on the functions of living organisms and their parts. Their Building and Engineering workshop helped the girls learn about how engineers think and process difficult problems. The girls also learned the basics of chemistry through a fun and engaging scavenger hunt with Dr. Walda Powell, Professor of Chemistry, Physics, and Geoscience at Meredith College. Additionally, Dr. Powell, led girls in creating binary bracelets and rockets, and they were excited to get hands-on with science together!
The campers also learned about the awesome career opportunities available in STEM by engaging in career panels with female experts from Stewart Engineering, Credit Suisse, and Dell. They embarked on adventures to places like the JC Raulston Arboretum, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and SAS to further expand their horizon and build a solid STEM foundation. Covering the basis in different areas like physiology, engineering, chemistry, and more, there was truly something for every girl with an interest in or a passion for the world of science.
Of course, there’s so much more that could be said about Girl Scout Summer Science Camp – but why tell you when you could experience it yourself next year?
