Leadership is a fundamental value of the Girl Scout movement. Through a variety of opportunities, Girl Scouts have the ability to test and strengthen their leadership skills, guiding them to become the future leaders of tomorrow.
Each year, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines offers Girl Scouts an exciting opportunity to grow in their leadership skills at Summer Leadership Camp. This August, 48 6th-8th grade Girl Scouts attended the week-long camp. The first part of the week took place at Camp Mary Atkinson, where campers worked through a variety of activities with their fellow Girl Scout friends to learn about the twists and turns of the maze of life. During group activity sessions, Girl Scouts had the opportunity to learn about personal leadership styles, communication skills, group dynamics, and relationship building.

During the second part of the week, campers took charge by planning a Take Action Project. Their projects gave them the chance to focus on a leadership or service topic in their community, allowing them to put their new skills into action. The rest of their time at Camp Mary Atkinson was filled with fun, with opportunities to participate in traditional camp activities such as archery, boating, and climbing the 50-foot Alpine Tower.

By the end of the week, Girl Scouts were ready to take on the world with new skills in their toolbelt. To conclude their time at camp, campers traveled to Meredith College for their final day of camp. While at Meredith College, campers had the opportunity to hear from students about their experiences at college, participate in fun games and leadership activities, and get a full tour of campus.
Following a tour of campus, campers participated in speed-mentoring sessions to conclude their final day of Leadership Camp. Mentors from various backgrounds came to share their experiences in different fields, and taught the campers about different career paths. It was rewarding for both campers and volunteers to see the next generation of female leaders actively investing in their futures.

Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines sends its sincerest thanks to each volunteer and organization who helped make Summer Leadership Camp 2023 a huge success. Because of you, 48 Girl Scouts now have the tools they will need to flourish in whatever path they choose to take.
