Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off this Wednesday, September 15, and lasts through Friday, October 15. Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. Did you know that Hispanics/Latinos accounted for 25% of North Carolina’s population increase over the past 20 years and the average age of Latinos living in North Carolina are 9 years old? We encourage Girl Scouts to celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries by learning more about them, studying Hispanic female leaders, and participating in hands-on activities where they can explore Hispanic cultures!

Check out this celebration message from the GSUSA Interim CEO, Judith Batty, and see below for some ways to get involved!

Girl Scout Hispanic Heritage Month Patch

There are a few ways that Girl Scouts can get involved! GSUSA is excited to release a NEW Girl Scout Hispanic Heritage Month patch! This fun patch is designed for Girl Scouts of all levels and their leaders, to celebrate the cultural richness of all people in the U.S. whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Girls and leaders have plenty of activities to choose from to earn this fun patch, and we encourage girls from all ethnic backgrounds to participate, they are sure to learn interesting new things.

Discovering Hispanic Heritage Patch Program

Our council also has an awesome patch program called the Discovering Hispanic Heritage patch program for Girl Scouts of all levels. This will be one of our Patches of the Month for October. This patch program is designed to help Girl Scouts of all cultures develop an understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic/Latin American culture through Discover, Connect, and Take Action. Activities include things like learning some Spanish, making a meal inspired by a Hispanic country, and more.

We can’t wait to learn about this awesome culture and celebrate our Hispanic Girl Scout sisters and alums! Learn more about these patches on our Patches and Kits page! After you earn the patch of your choosing, you can purchase it in our council shops, submit an order using our online order form, or by emailing your patch request to our retail team at shop@nccoastalpines.org. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, Girl Scouts!
