In honor of the vision that Juliette Gordon Low, affectionately known as “Daisy”, had for girls across the nation, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines awards 12 troops from the council each year with the title of Daisy Dozen Elite Troop. These troops go above and beyond in their outstanding leadership experiences. In a full troop effort, girls complete activities and programs in categories such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), financial literacy, camp and the outdoors, and entrepreneurship.

Congratulations to the following Daisy Dozen Elite Troops of 2017:

Troop #515, Carteret County
Girl Scout Troop #515 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by enhancing their leadership experience by emphasizing and championing the girl-led experience. Girls did everything from choosing what badges they’d like to work towards to deciding on community service projects to complete. With community service as a core tenant of Girl Scouts, the girls decided to dedicate several hours to making the world a better place. The girls discovered needs within their community and took action to make a positive difference in the community by cleaning up local beaches and parks, collecting coats for Hurricane Matthew victims, making baskets for area police, fire, and EMS departments to show their appreciation and, so much more. In addition to their other activities, Girl Scout Troop #515 grew as a whole by trying new things in an environment that teaches them to be their own unique self. These experiences allowed the girls to learn new things that they may not have had the chance to otherwise. Girl Scout Troop #515 is a Junior troop with girls in grades 4-5. The troop has 7 members and is led by Tracy H.

 

Troop # 693, Durham County
Girl Scout Troop #693 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by expanding their Girl Scout Leadership Experience including participating in outdoor activities like camping and hiking. The troop also attended numerous council events like Engineer It, Science is Everywhere, and Sparkle Day, and learned about new cultures by studying different countries and showcasing what they learned for an International Luncheon. In addition to their other activities, Troop #693 registered 13 new girls and 10 new adults by encouraging girls to bring a friend to several troop meetings. Girl Scout Troop #693 is a Junior troop with girls in grades 4-5. The troop has 21 members and is led by Leila J.

 

Troop #4018, Edgecombe County
Girl Scout Troop #4018 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by building new Girl Scout Leadership Experiences by participating in World Thinking Day, cleaned up a local park to ensure their community and our waterways stay clean, hosted a food drive to support local food pantries, and launched a troop blanket making drive. In addition to their other activities, Girl Scout Troop #4018 made birthday bags for sick children. Edgecombe County Girl Scout Troop #4018 is a Brownie troop with girls in grades 2-3. The troop has 15 members and is co-led by Lynn S., Christina W., and Christina A.

 

Troop #1111, Franklin County
Girl Scout Troop #1111 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. The troop pursued their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) by developing their own robotics team, which received state-wide recognition. Additionally, the girls enhanced their leadership development through community service as they took action to maintain and care for a local naturalized park. Additionally, Girl Scout Troop #1111 embraced their love of new cultures and places by traveling to Washington D.C. and Arlington National Cemetery as well as Asheville, NC where they camped, toured Biltmore Estate. The girls also enjoyed fun activities like an underwater egg hunt and participated in their local area fall camporee. The troop has over 30 members led by troop leader Wendy F.

 

Troop #583, Franklin County
Girl Scout Troop #583 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. These girls pursued their interest in nature by trying out new outdoor activities and by participating in local Girl Scout events like TechnoQuest, Scouting for the Cure, and Outdoor Skills Training. The girls also enhanced their leadership development through community service by participating in United Way’s “Build-A-Backpack” and the “Feeding Franklin” fall food drive. The troop has over 15 members led by troop leader Hilary A.

 

Troop #4871, Harnett County
Girl Scout Troop #4871 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. These girls pursued their interest in nature by trying out new outdoor activities and participating in their local Girl Scout camporee. The girls also enhanced their leadership development through community service by having a baking party and delivered the baked goods to local police and firefighters in their communities, explored in-depth issues such as bullying and peer pressure, and additionally volunteered their time at the Leilani Horse Rescue to learn more about the animals and the need in the community. The multi-level troop has over 16 members led by troop leader Amy T.

 

Troop #1902, Hoke County
Girl Scout Troop #1902 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by building new Girl Scout Leadership Experiences including seeking outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, archery, and reading trail signs. The girls even planned their own area cookie rally and participated in skill-building activities like Science of Happiness and Eating for Beauty events. Girl Scout Troop #1902 is a Cadette troop with girls in grades 6-8. The troop has 18 members and is led by Betsy R.

 

Troop #530, Nash County
Girl Scout Troop #530 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. These innovative Girl Scouts hosted a Founder’s Day Carnival at a local mall that was opened to the public. By reaching out to local media to help spread the word, the girls celebrated Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday with over 300 people in their community and increased awareness about girl leadership opportunities. Additionally, Girl Scout Troop #530 embraced their love of new cultures and places by traveling to Savannah, Georgia where they explored the birthplace of Girl Scouts. The Cadette troop has girls in grades 6-8 and has 7 members led by troop leader Christy S.

 

Troop #3642, Onslow County
Girl Scout Troop #3462 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. These girls pursued their interest in nature by trying out new outdoor activities and participating in their local Girl Scout camporee. These future leaders even had the opportunity to attend a town hall meeting to learn more about their local community and government. Additionally, Troop #3462 honed their financial literacy skills and used their troop proceeds to help fund their leadership programs and to provide meeting supplies in order for them complete badge requirements and learn new skills. The Brownie troop has girls in grades 2-3 and has over 30 members led by troop leader Leah R.

 

Troop #1274, Orange County
Girl Scout Troop #1274 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by identifying and participating in new leadership experiences that provided hands-on experiences across a variety of fields and topics. The troop enhanced their leadership development through community service as they took action and hosted food and blanket drives, and provided toys and treats to a local animal shelter. The girls used their talents to innovate and improve the Girl Scout Camping 101 program to help teach fire safety, outdoor cookie safety, hiking, bandanna skills, and more to first-time campers. This year marks 10 years since troop #1274 first started. The multi-level troop has girls ranging from Daisies to Seniors and has 50 members led by troop leader Lauren I.

 

Troop #1555, Wake County
Girl Scout Troop #1555 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by focusing on helping others. One of their most beloved service projects provided a local family with Christmas gifts. The girls used their cookie proceed money to purchase gifts, set a budget, shopped for the clothing and toys, and finished by wrapping all of the gifts. In addition to their other activities, Troop #1555 has been on some amazing trips. After working hard during the Cookie Program, the girls reward themselves with fun trips to places like Charlotte where they toured the North Carolina Panther stadium, panned for gold, took a local food tour, tried a room escape game, and went to an amusement park. In 2015, the girls traveled to Asheville where they hiked with llamas, toured the Biltmore Estate & Basilica of Saint Lawrence, tried Sliding Rock, and enjoyed a Pinball Museum. Girl Scout Troop #1555 is a Senior troop with girls in grades 9-10. The troop has 7 members and is led by Deda B.

 

Troop #1752, Wake County
Girl Scout Troop #1752 was awarded The Daisy Dozen Elite Troop title by building their confidence and participating in the Fall Product Program and Cookie Program each year. By working together at a cookie booth or selling Girl Scout cookies with friends, the girls developed a better understanding of financial literacy. The troop even used their cookie proceeds to make comfort bags for children staying in domestic abuse shelters. In addition to their other activities, Girl Scout Troop #1752 used troop funds to have their first camp experience. The troop rented a lodge at Blue Jay Point Park and completed the Between Earth and Sky Journey activities. The girls continue to explore the outdoors and participate in community service activities. Girl Scout Troop #1752 is a Brownie troop with girls in grades 2-3. The troop has 12 members and is led by Amy B.
