Who’s ready for summer? We can’t wait for your girl to enjoy all of the awesome outdoor activities Girl Scout Camp has to offer like archery, canoeing, and crafts to name a few. You’ve learned about Camp Hardee and Camp Graham, and last, but not least, is Camp Mary Atkinson!

Camp Mary Atkinson is located in Johnston County, only 40 minutes from Raleigh. The property spans over 278 wooded acres and is home to traditional resident camp, day camp, adventure trips, and an on-site horse program! Depending on age level, campers are offered the chance to climb the alpine tower and boulder on the climbing grotto. Access to a zero entry swimming pool and lake offers campers a chance to swim multiple times a day as well as participate in watercraft activities.

Camp Director Sheryl McGlory loves Camp Mary Atkinson, and had so many great things to tell us in our Q&A.

1. Tell us about your position and role with camp.

I am the Camp Director at Camp Mary Atkinson (CMA)! I am responsible for hiring our summer camp staff, planning training and camp sessions, and overseeing the day-to-day workings of camp all summer.

2. How long have you been in your position?

I have been in my position at Camp Mary Atkinson for one year, but have worked in a camp environment for several years.

3. What do you look forward to every summer?

There are so many things to look forward to in the summer, it’s hard to pick just one! I get to work at CMA during the year when it’s quiet and so I love when camp starts and our property is filled with girls and staff singing songs and having fun again.

4. Favorite Camp Activity?

One of my favorite activities is a nature hike – especially an evening one!

5. What makes Girl Scout Camp unique?

Girl Scout Camp is unique because it’s a time to share fun experiences with other young women, learn about our differences and similarities, and encourage one another to grow in courage, confidence and character.

6. Any best kept secrets at the camp property?

If I told you, they wouldn’t be secrets! 🙂 I think the best secrets are the hidden treasures of nature we can spot if we’re really looking. That, and platform tents are super fun to sleep in!

7. Why should girls attend Girl Scout Camp?

Girls should attend Girl Scout Camp to make new friends, share lots of laughs, sing silly songs, try new things, and create lasting memories!

There’s truly something for every girl at Camp Mary Atkinson! Want to see what camp is like? Join us for our free open house event on March 19 to tour the camp property and meet our camp staff! We look forward to seeing you there!
