I’m Going Gold! One Girl’s Journey To Earning Her Gold Award

By Destiny O., GSNCCP Girl Board Member

Hey, it’s Destiny again from the Girl Board! I hope you’ve enjoyed all the Girl Board blog posts, we are having a blast writing them.

Recently, I finished my Girl Scout Gold Award project and I thought now would be the perfect time to tell you guys about it and the process that goes into Going Gold.

My project was called Kids Korners, yes with a K, where I created waiting areas for children at my local hospitals. I worked with CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern and Haly Burton Naval Clinic on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point to try to make waiting areas more entertaining and less stressful for kids.

Once I received approval on my proposal, I kicked-off my project by envisioning what I wanted the waiting areas to look like. I built and painted bookshelves with my dad and I also made sure each area had a small table and chairs, along with colorful wall decals to make the space fun and inviting.

I collected book donations to fill the shelves and also created my own activity book based on the importance of reading and going to the doctor. Each activity book was printed, stapled, and then placed into a Ziploc bag with three crayons for kids to enjoy. Lastly, each bookshelf had a container of Girl Scout flyers provided to me by Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines.

I am very proud of both my Kids Korners and they turned out better than I ever imagined! You can find the Haly Burton Naval Clinic Kids Korner in the hospital Pharmacy and the  CarolinaEast Medical Center Kids Korner is located in the Emergency Department.

For Girl Scouts who are figuring out what they want to do for their Gold Award, I suggest choosing a project you are going to enjoy. I love children and reading, and I want to be an interior designer, so being able to design the Kids Korners and bring books to the youngest generation is something I am proud of.  Pick a project you feel passionate about…it will motivate you to stick with your project and give it your all.

What are you doing to earn your Gold Award? What inspires you to go gold?
