From October 25-29, Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines is recognizing and celebrating our donors with Donor Appreciation Week! Juliette Gordon Low, said it best, “Ours is a circle of friendships united by ideals.” Thank you for believing in the power of girl ambition and the Girl Scout promise, and for being our Girl Scout friend! Meet a few of our Girl Scout friends who help us continue to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Membership Initiatives Executive Terrica Hay has been a friend to Girl Scouts so long she’s family. A staff donor since 2007, her support provides resources to help girls develop healthy relationship skills in our Be a Friend First program.
For Terrica, it all started with a Girl Scout cookie. Her dad, then a Marine at Camp Lejeune, came home with a box of Thin Mints, and Terrica feel in love after one bite. Her parents then signed their 7-year-old up for Girl Scouts. Terrica would later go one to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, and after graduating college join Girl Scouts as staff. Through Girl Scouts, Terrica made life-long friends that she now considers family. She and her Girl Scout sisters talk daily and celebrate holidays together.
Terrica credits her amazing leaders and co-leaders for helping cultivate her love of service. Girl Scouts is not just where Terrica works, Girl Scouts is part of who she is. Her favorite part of Girl Scouts is helping girls discover who they are and using those skills to make the world a better place.

Thank you to our Girl Scout friends who made the Program Building renovation at Camp Mary Atkinson possible!
The renovated program building will improve the Camp Mary Atkinson experience by providing a space for girls to grow into strong and capable leaders while having fun and making new friends. Being at Girl Scout camp inspires curiosity, discovery, and problem-solving for girls. Whether learning to canoe or kayak, conquering the 50-ft Alpine Tower, programming robots, or developing community-living and friendships, girls grow in their courage and teamwork skills. And now, Girl Scouts have a new space to utilize in the program building year-round for activities like life-skills training, badgework, robotics, healthy-living programs, and a place to refresh on a hot summer camp day. We are so grateful for the incredible donors who made this possible, including:

Girl Scout Alum Elise B. donated her cookie money to support future Girl Scout sisters so that they can have the resources they need to be Girl Scout Strong. She’s been a Girl Scout since the 2nd grade and is currently a freshman at the University of UNC-Chapel Hill studying Environmental Science and Political Science. She has attended countless camporees, camping trips, summer camps, and even a trip to Washington D.C. with the troops she’s been a part of and earned her Girl Scout Bronze Award [LO1] as an 8th grader. Elise was also awarded a medal for selling the 2nd most amount of products during the fall sale season in her county. She’s participated in two seasons of the fall sale and every cookie season since being a girl scout.

We’ve been able to rely on the support of our friends like Girl Scout Troop # 4198 Co-leader, Alesha Edison Westbrook, and Board Member, Cheryl Burns. Alesha and Cheryl helped raise over $2,000 for our Building Beyond Tomorrow Campaign to provide resources to girls and families as they have navigated how to stay connected and heal.

When applying the wisdom of these words to anything Alesha does so as a Girl Scout leader, including fundraising, she amends it to read: “The function of leadership is to create leaders.” She loves that Girl Scouts gives girls the freedom to explore, learn, and discover on their journey to becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
If you have every received an email from Cheryl Y. Burns, you may have notice a quote from Marian Wright Elderman that reads “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.” From the time she read this quote, she realized that her blessings were not solely intended for her and that it was her obligation to share her blessing by way of service to others.
Since 2012, Cheryl has shared her time, talents, and monies with the Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines. As a member of the Board, she has had the great privilege of serving on and heading the Volunteer Recognition Committee. In 2017, it was her honor to represent her council at the National Council Session as a National Delegate. Cheryl was a Girl Scout for a few years while in elementary and middle school.
She gives to Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines because she wants to do her part in ensuring that young girls are given every opportunity to be the best versions of themselves, and she believes that Girl Scouts gives them what they need to do exactly that. She decided to fundraise this year to introduce her friends and family to GSNCCP and to give them the chance to support her and an organization that she loves.

Thanks to the Margaret Pickard Sirvis Fund, girls can continue to make memories with friends at Camp Graham for years to come. Margaret Pickard Sirvis, known to her fellow Girl Scouts as Peggy, was a Girl Scout for nearly 80 years. Peggy loved camp and the opportunities it provides for girls to grow in the outdoors when they learn new skills, make friends, create memories, and even sing songs around the campfire.
