It’s Financial Literacy Month! How knowledgeable do you consider yourself when it comes to knowing what girls really want to know about being financially savvy? Did you know that research shows that nine in ten girls (90 percent) say it is important for them to learn how to manage money and 87 percent say that it is important to set financial goals? When asked what skills they are most interested in learning more about, girls’ most popular choices relate to how to save and plan: for their future goals in general (68 percent); to make big purchases, like a home or car (46 percent); and to pay for education (45 percent).
Having it All: Girls and Financial Literacy reveals that most girls expect to be independent and financially empowered, see few gender barriers in their way, and have high expectations for their future financial lives. However, there still exist important gaps in their financial acumen, and parents can play a powerful role in filling these gaps by having discussions with their daughters about money and finances. Most importantly, girls need and want financial literacy skills to help them achieve their dreams. Good news, a partnership between Girl Scout North Carolina Coastal Pines and Fidelity Investments® offers girls an opportunity to flex their financial literacy muscles! Through the “Let It Grow” Investment Patch Program, girls can unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ and gain the financial skills they need to be successful in life.
The Fidelity Investments Let It Grow Investment Patch Program introduces Girl Scouts to investing for their future. When girls complete the program requirements, they receive a Fidelity Investments “Let It Grow” patch. The program allows girls to continue to build their skills as they progress through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, earning patch segments developed for their age levels. The program is available to Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors (grades K-12) and girls may start earning patch bars at any level.
The youngest Girl Scouts – Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors, in grades K-5, learn to think about and save for the future, invest in others, and invest in business. Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassador Girl Scouts, in grades 6-12, gain practical knowledge in funding a college education, and investing in a home and for retirement. Each girl who earns a level of the “Let It Grow” patch program is eligible for the “Let It Grow” patch and the patch for the level she earned (shipping fees apply as this order is not fulfilled by GS-NCCP patch).
