Why I Love Girl Scouts

By: Debbie Todd, Membership Director

I was recently asked why I love Girl Scouts.  My life as a Membership Director for Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines gets crazy, frequently.  There’s a lot that needs to be done, especially during fall recruitment season, during the Girl Scout Cookie Program, and during end-of-year celebrations, but the joy of watching girls make new friends, earn their first badge, and realize the impact they make in the world makes the crazy days all worthwhile. Working for and with Girl Scouts is a gift, an opportunity, and an honor.

When you work alongside inspiring and amazing girls, it’s easy to count blessings and be reminded of how lucky I am to watch these young women turn into courageous and confident leaders. Every day I witness girls’ eyes open to their own abilities and strengths and their confidence soar to new heights. I also have the pleasure of working with so many wonderful volunteers. Encouraging them to be the best role-models for our girls and helping them achieve more than they ever thought possible. Cheering on our girls and our volunteers as they use their skills and talents to build a better world – these are the magic moments that serve as constant reminders of how importing Girl Scouting is to our local communities and why every girl deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and lead. It’s also why we need volunteers in our communities to step forward and help us empower and encourage girls to take the lead and make the world a better place.

I’ve been a Girl Scout very a long time. It’s part of whom I am and I am so proud to help build the next generation of girls into the leaders they are meant to be. To me, being a Girl Scout is something that lives within in you – even when you hang up your sash or put your away pin. Being a Girl Scout is asking yourself to see the good in everything you do and in others and when you see a gap or something that needs a little help – leading the change to make it right. That’s why I love Girl Scouts.
