Traveling is a great way for girls to gain experiences exploring new places and new culture. Over spring break, nine adult members and one Girl Scout Ambassador from Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines traveled to Our Cabaña in hot and sunny Mexico. This was the first visit for all but one of our travelers to the Girl Scout World Centre located in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
What a fabulous time we had! We arrived on Saturday afternoon and got settled into the dorms. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the staff was fantastic and very accommodating – they took great care of us.
We spent Sunday in Tepotzlan and Tlayacapan. We toured cathedrals, shopped in the local markets, and made pottery.
On Monday, we had a day at the centre learning about Mexico by doing a scavenger hunt and making some traditional Mexican crafts. In the evening we had a salsa dancing lesson.
Tuesday we drove to Taxco, the Silver City, and enjoyed our day there. We toured the city, did quite a bit of shopping, and some of us even took a cable car (after a crazy taxi ride) up to get an impressive view of the city. I t was a great day!
Wednesday morning was dedicated to service. We painted over two walls full of graffiti on a building that is used for young pregnant women who have no other place to stay. That evening, we had a lovely dinner at Las Mañanitas, watching the birds on the grounds and eating traditional Mexican food. We even had fun chasing a flamingo out of the ladies’ bathroom.
Thursday we spent the morning at the pyramids at Xochicalco. They were amazing! We climbed all over them and explored the grounds. We had a cooking lesson in the afternoon where we made enchiladas with a green sauce, and relaxed after dinner while watching a movie.
We spent our last full day visiting the town of Cuernavaca, “City of Eternal Spring.” We visited the cathedrals, shopped in the market, toured the Palace of Cortez and the Robert Brady House, and enjoyed a lovely lunch at Casa Hidalgo.
The closing ceremony was special as the staff of Our Cabaña built us a campfire, ending the week with campfire songs and a pinning ceremony.
It was a wonderful week and I can’t wait to go back. What destinations are you hoping to visit with your Girl Scouts?
