Stronger Together: A Partnership with Jones County Schools

What started with a simple request for space has grown into a meaningful and lasting partnership between Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines (GS–NCCP) and the schools of Jones County. Today, that partnership is empowering hundreds of girls to build confidence, leadership skills, and resilience—while strengthening the fabric of their community.

From Small Beginnings to Big Impact

The collaboration began in 2020, when GS–NCCP sought opportunities to bring programming to Jones County families. A local connection and shared vision quickly turned into a partnership that provided not just space for Girl Scouts, but a commitment to bringing new opportunities directly to students.

By 2021, Girl Scouts had become a visible presence in three elementary schools—Maysville, Pollocksville, and Comfort—serving nearly 60 students through activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage teamwork, and introduce leadership at a young age. The engagement deepened as more schools saw the value of Girl Scout programs. At Trenton Elementary, Girl Scouts partnered closely with school leaders to provide consistent programming during the academic year, helping students build essential skills while experiencing the fun, supportive environment that Girl Scouts is known for.

Sustained Growth Across Schools

In just a few short years, the Jones County partnership has grown dramatically. By 2022, more than 80 students were participating, and by 2023, that number nearly tripled. Today, in the 2024–2025 school year, over 250 students are engaged in Girl Scout programs across multiple school sites. This growth is a direct result of collaboration with principals, counselors, educators, and families who believe in creating strong leadership foundations for their students.

The partnership also expanded formally in 2023 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Jones Senior High School. This agreement, developed with school leadership, ensured that Girl Scouts would remain a stable, trusted presence even through changes in administration. That continuity has made it possible for students to enjoy reliable programming year after year, no matter the challenges.

A Model of Community Partnership

Made possible through the generous support of The Anonymous Trust, GS–NCCP’s presence in Jones County is more than a program—it’s a model of what happens when communities work together to create opportunities. Weekly programming on an alternating A/B schedule provides consistent touchpoints for students, giving them a chance to explore new interests, practice leadership, and build social-emotional skills in a safe, encouraging environment.

The initiative also reflects the resilience and spirit of Jones County itself. Families, educators, and Girl Scouts have worked side by side to create an atmosphere of growth and support, ensuring that every girl has the chance to learn, connect, and thrive.

Looking Ahead

Many of the original participants from 2021 are now in middle school and continuing their Girl Scout journey, showing how consistent programming can have a lasting impact. With new administrators stepping in for the 2024–2025 school year, Girl Scouts is proud to remain a steady and reliable partner, adapting alongside the community to meet its evolving needs.

As this partnership enters its fifth year, the focus remains clear: helping girls grow into leaders of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. The lessons learned in Jones County have already inspired new approaches for Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines across the region, serving as a model for how intentional, long-term collaboration can empower both individuals and communities.
