STEM, S’mores, and Summer Fun: Girl Scout Camp at Greene Intermediate

From hands-on experiments to unforgettable outdoor adventures, Greene Intermediate School in Snow Hill was buzzing with excitement during the week of June 23–26, as it hosted a STEM-themed Girl Scout Day Camp for rising 4th–6th grade girls.

Made possible through a partnership with Greene Intermediate School and support from Anonymous Trust, this special camp was designed to empower girls in a time of transition—welcoming rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders as they explored new environments, built friendships and gained confidence ahead of the school year. Principal Dr. Willis was excited to provide this opportunity for girls at the school, continuing the connection built during an afterschool Girl Scout program earlier in the year. More than just a summer program, this camp offered a space where girls could learn, explore, and grow together through the unique lens of Girl Scouting.

A Week of Curiosity, Creativity, and Confidence

Each day introduced a new theme and engaging activities that encouraged campers to grow and discover. Girls used the scientific method to make predictions and test outcomes through colorful bubble experiments—turning fun into a deeper understanding of how science works in real life.

They also learned practical safety skills with a fire safety lesson that emphasized smart choices, emergency awareness, and how to respond with confidence—valuable lessons both inside and outside the classroom.

One of the week’s favorite STEM moments was the solar oven challenge, where girls engineered their own ovens using simple materials and harnessed the power of the sun to cook s’mores! The hands-on project encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and a little bit of a tasty reward.

Science Meets the Real World

In addition to daily activities, campers had the opportunity to connect with real-world science and nature experts. The Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium’s traveling exhibit brought the wonders of North Carolina’s diverse aquatic habitats straight to camp. Girls were able to see, touch, and learn about the plants and animals that call our state home—bringing science out of the textbook and into their hands.

Later in the week, the Imagination Station Science & History Museum gave a high-voltage presentation on electricity, helping girls explore energy through exciting demonstrations and interactive learning.

These experiences not only sparked interest in STEM but also introduced girls to possible careers and pathways they might pursue in the future—showing them that science is for everyone, and it starts right here.

Adventure, Friendship, and Fun—Girl Scout Style

While STEM was the focus, this day camp was also packed with classic Girl Scout experiences. Girls learned the basics of archery, took part in geocaching adventures, played team-building games, and made new friends at every turn.

Whether they were building camp crafts, singing songs, or learning how to problem-solve as a team, campers had the chance to step out of their comfort zones and try something new in a safe, supportive space.

For many of the girls, this week wasn’t just about learning facts or trying new activities—it was about discovering what they’re capable of, and realizing that being a Girl Scout means believing in yourself, even when things feel unfamiliar.

Growing the Next Generation of Leaders

At Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines, we believe that confidence grows through doing. This camp was the perfect reflection of that value—blending STEM education, life skills, and community-building in a way that left campers feeling empowered, connected, and proud of what they’d achieved.

With generous support from Anonymous Trust, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is able to expand its Community Engagement Program across eastern North Carolina—bringing hands-on, interactive experiences to over 600 girls in Greene County and beyond. Programs like this camp help girls build confidence, explore STEM, and develop leadership skills—all through meaningful experiences delivered directly in their communities.

Whether they were discovering how solar ovens work, exploring nature, or navigating new friendships, each girl left with something valuable: a deeper connection to her community, a stronger belief in her abilities, and a reminder that Girl Scouts is where she can grow into whoever she wants to be.
