When a Girl Scout decides to pursue their Gold Award project, the possibilities for making a true and long-lasting impact are endless. By focusing on a topic that is important to them, Gold Award Girl Scouts lead the way to lasting change in their communities and beyond.
About the GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship
Each year, Girl Scouts of the USA recognizes the remarkable achievements of Gold Award Girl Scouts through their Gold Award Scholarship. Available for high school seniors or graduates who earned their Gold Award, the scholarship recognizes and provides financial support to one Gold Award Girl Scout per council. Recipients of the GSUSA Scholarship receive a life-changing scholarship award of $10,000 and an official award letter, allowing them to continue pursuing their goals confidently beyond Girl Scouts. This year, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is thrilled to announce the recipient of our councils’ GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship, Scarlett Francini.

Scarlett Francini is a Gold Award Girl Scout from Chatham County, North Carolina. When deciding on a topic for her Gold Award project, Scarlett chose an issue that was important to her that will leave a lasting impact on members of her local community. Scarlett recognized that food waste from school lunches can have a negative impact on the environment, and that composting is a great way to turn food scraps into rich nutrients. With this in mind, Scarlett decided to implement a composting system at Hawbridge Lower School in Saxapahaw, North Carolina.
To achieve her goal of implementing a community-centric composting system, Scarlett educated students from Hawbridge Lower School about composting properly and how to reduce general landfill waste. With their new knowledge, the students created posters to track the amount of food being composted. The waste from the new compost system will be utilized as natural fertilizer for local community gardens. In addition, members of the small village of Saxapahaw will be able to volunteer to utilize the compost within the community gardens.
Scarlett’s future plans include attending Duke University where she will study electrical and computer engineering. Her Gold Award project is a testament to the powerful difference Girl Scouts are making everyday in an effort to make the world a better place. We are beyond proud to honor Scarlett’s amazing achievement and scholarship award, and know that she will continue to make a positive impact wherever she goes. Join us in congratulating Scarlett on this remarkable achievement.
