As our Wild About Camp summer season comes to a close, outdoor enthusiasts don’t fret! Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines is getting revved up for an adventurous year that would make any avid outdoorswoman envious.
One of many exciting adventures that lie ahead this year is the new Outdoor Explorer badge program for Girl Scouts. Informed by thorough research about the benefits of time spent outdoors, Girl Scouts themselves led the charge and voted to create this new outdoor badge series. For the first time ever, the new badge materials and requirements are now available online.
And what’s also impressive is that the benefits of the Girl Scout outdoor experience do not end with the joy of earning a new badge! According to More Than S’mores, a 2014 study by the Girl Scout Research Institute, girls benefit immensely from time spent outdoors. Girls who regularly spend time outdoors are more likely than their peers with less outdoor experience to possess certain leadership traits, such as environmental stewardship, willingness to seek challenges, and problem solving skills. Participating in Girl Scouts has proven to be one of the best ways for a girl to get a quality outdoor experience!
Furthermore, to ensure girls have every opportunity to venture into the great outdoors, Girl Scouts of the USA has recently announced a new partnership with the National Park Service for the Girl Scout Ranger Program. Girl Scouts can now join with a national park in their area for an organized outdoor service project.
We are so fortunate to live in a state with access to exceptional state parks, beaches, and mountains. There are seemingly endless places to explore the outdoors across North Carolina. There is no better time or place for girls to get involved with Girl Scouts and experience all that we have to offer as part of the girl-designed outdoor initiative and the Outdoor Explorer Badge program.
