How Girl Scouts Has Helped Me Try New Things

September 11, 2013

UntitledHi!  My name is Hannah and I am one of six Girl Scouts on the Board of Directors for Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines. Us Girl Scout Girl Board Members have started a new blog series to keep you updated on what we’re doing and to make us available to be your voice! Take a look at all our blog posts and let us know what you think!

There are a lot of reasons why being a Girl Scout is awesome, but my favorite is that it has allowed me to learn about things and develop interests that I doubt I would have even thought about if I was not a Girl Scout. One interest I’ve developed through Girl Scouting is jewelry making!

A few years ago my Girl Scout troop was interested in learning how to make jewelry and we were excited to learn together! We ended up visiting a local family-owned jewelry store to learn more about making our own jewelry and the history and art behind the whole process. It was so much fun and something that really helped bond our troop.

However, once our troop activity was done, I didn’t stop making jewelry. It had become a passion and a hobby of mine that lives on. In fact, one of my Girl Scouts sisters and I started going to a bead shop and making jewelry together. Even now that my fellow Girl Scout has moved away, we keep in touch and we still have jewelry to keep us together.

Over the years, I’ve expanded upon this new skill. I’ve learned to create fun and funky pieces with a variety of materials, including making jewelry chains. Being a Girl Scout, I knew I had the confidence and skills to take on this new aspect of jewelry making. I looked up videos and books on how to make different types of chains and now it’s one of my favorite pieces to create!

Being a Girl Scout has introduced me to a lot of interests I never knew existed. I’m excited to see what the next few years will bring and what kind of skills I’ll develop – all thanks to Girl Scouts!

What skills and interest have you developed as part of Girl Scouts? Tell us about your projects and passions in the comments below!
