Setting Goals and Achieving Dreams: New Troop Leader Series

February 10, 2014

By Tiffany Haywood, Daisy Troop Leader

Cookie Sale - Setting GoalsAs part of our plan to help prepare our girls for Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines’ Cookie Sale we decided to plan an activity around goal setting to help each girl achieve dreams they have an individual as well as a troop.

To start off, the leaders talked about goals. We explained that a goal is setting a target for what you want to do within a certain time frame.  For our troop, we are looking to achieve our goals by the end of the Cookie Sale (March 2, 2014).

After the girls had a strong grasp on how to define a goal, we then asked each Girl Scout what their personal package goals were for the Cookie Sale. As Troop Leaders, we were already aware of where their parents felt they could sell during the cookie season. We were eager to find out if the girls felt the same way.

Once we heard all of the girls’ goals we started to discuss how their individual goals could also help the entire troop succeed.  We explained how every box a girl sells helps meet the troop goal.  It was amazing to watch as each of our Daisies realized that they could help each other by reaching their set goals.

What better than a fun activity to help the girls visualize individual and troop goals! We created a dream board showing everything they wanted to do with the earrings from the cookie sale. We are proud to say we have some very ambitious yet realistic girls with amazing goals ahead of them.  Some of the ideas on the dream boards included visiting Build-a-Bear, the Zoo, the Aquarium and so much more!

In addition to our dream board activity, we also made each girl a really cool Cookie Sale Info Lanyards. Each lanyard includes a price sheet for the favorite varieties and the NEW Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread cookies as well as a photo cookie chart.

I have no doubt our Girl Scouts will be able to achieve anything they set their hearts to.

How do you teach your Girl Scouts to set goals and achieve them? Do you lead by example of perhaps a story or activity? How do you celebrate achieving goals?

Ready, Set, Earn! New Troop Leader Series

January 28, 2014

Girl Scout - NC Coastal Pines Cookie SaleThis week we had our very first Troop Meeting since the holiday break AND our local Cookie Rally!  We were so excited!  Ummm…WE being the Troop Leaders!  We couldn’t wait to get our girls ready and prepped for the Cookie Sale including learning how to set their goals and how to approach the customers and earn!

That’s right folks, it’s more than just “Do you want to buy some cookies?”  Even at the Daisy and Brownie levels, we teach the girls how to introduce themselves, the Troop and the product.  We also make certain each girl knows how to be safe, to be confident and to be successful right from the beginning.

We decided the best way to teach the girls were to divide and conquer different aspects of the Cookie Sale. I focused on teaching the girls the value of the money – how much we earn for each box we sell, how to tell the customer the prices, and even how to know what more than one box will cost.   There is nothing that can give you more confidence than knowledge.

In addition to teaching the girls the costs we also shared how achieving their sales goals they will help them earn rewards and prizes.  Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines along with the cookie baker’s website allows the girls to track their progress, badges, and rewards and recognition throughout the sale.

After I had my lesson time with the Daisies we came together with our Brownies to practice our customer service skills .  My Daisies were the customers and our Brownies were the sellers.   Since this is their first year selling we had them approach as if in a door-to-door situation. As they went through each step we coached them.

After all our prep, our girls are out and ready to sell! To all you Troop Leaders out here – tell me how your cookie sale is going or post questions for me in the comments below!
