Top Seller supports our Military

Taylor - Girl Scouts - NC Coastal PinesAt the end of every Cookie Sale, our department calculates all kinds of statistics – how many boxes were sold? How many girls participated? What was the most popular variety? And of course, which Girl Scouts lead area and council sales?

This year, a new number jumped out during our calculations – $2,565.50 to be exact.  That is the amount of donations that Taylor W., a member of Girl Scout Cadette Troop #877, collected for Operation Cookie Drop.  That’s enough to purchase 733 boxes of cookies! This is almost an 100% increase over the amount she collected last year, and a 50% increase above last year’s top seller for this donation program.

Congratulations, Taylor!  We are so impressed by her leadership.  As her grandmother said to me,“I am so very proud of her.” And so are we! Taylor received a beautiful plaque honoring her achievement.

Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines is in our tenth year of Operation Cookie Drop. In our first year, donations helped purchase 45,000 boxes, and over the last ten years we have shipped almost 700,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our military! Following the 2014 sale, cookies were delivered to Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, Cherry Point in Havelock, Fort Bragg near Fayetteville, NCPacks4Patriots in Ayden, Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, and both the USO of NC at RDU airport and in Jacksonville.

To have that taste of home, that walk down memory lane to a happy time, means the world to our troops. But most of all, our troops know that they are not forgotten, and their country still appreciates their service, and thinks of them,” said Barbara Whitehead, director of NCPacks4Patriots.

Maj. Gen. Robert Hedelund, commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Cherry Point, added, “They’ve joined the Marine Corps. They get moved all over the country, and if they come to a place like Cherry Point and the greater Havelock area, they really feel that community reach out and touch them, even through cookies. It’s something that they’ll never forget, so we appreciate it.”

These sentiments are exactly why Girl Scouts works so hard for the Operation Cookie Drop program.  It provides girls and the community the opportunity to support our military, many of whom are part of our Girl Scout family.

The 5 Skills: Learning by Earning

Every winter here at Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines we celebrate the biggest girl-led business in the world that generates almost $800 million in annual sales – the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Girls sell over 200 million cookie packages a year to more than 50 million cookie customers.

And these aren’t just cookies – they’re opportunities! When girls participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale program, they learn by earning.   Girls learn five essential skills by selling Girl Scout cookies. The program’s 5 Skills help them achieve their goals and pave the way for a lifetime of success.

Skill #1 – Business Ethics

Girls act honestly and responsibly during every step of the cookie sale. This matters because employers want to hire ethical employees—and the world needs ethical leaders in every field.  

Skill #2 – People Skills

Girls learn how to talk (and listen!) to their customers, as well as learning how to work as a team with other girls. This matters because it helps them do better in school (on group projects, on sports teams, and on the playground) and, later, at work.

Skill #3 – Money Management

Girls develop a budget, take cookie orders, and handle customers’ money. This matters because girls need to know how to handle money—from their lunch money to their allowance to (someday) their paycheck.

Skill #4 – Decision Making

Girls decide where and when to sell cookies, how to market their sale, and what to do with their earnings. This matters because girls must make many decisions, big and small, in their lives. Learning this skill helps them make good ones.

Skill #5 – Goal Setting

Girls set cookie sales goals and, with their team, create a plan to reach them. This matters because girls need to know how to set and reach goals to succeed in school, on the job, and in life.

Why do these 5 Skills matter?

Because when your Girl Scout has learned these skills, she’ll be poised for success in her career. Think about it – when employers interview job candidates, they all look for the same things. This is true whether the employer is a bank, high-tech company, university, hospital, publishing house, car dealership, accounting firm—or even the local pet store!

They want someone who can set goals and meet deadlines. Someone who works well with others.  Someone who understands customers. Someone who can influence others. Someone who is honest, trustworthy, and reliable.
