Oh, a Camping She Will Go

April 7, 2013

By Cecily Timmons, Development Director

As a child, I was so shy that making friends was difficult. However, the camp experience cracked my tough shell and helped me to blossom. Removed from my normal world of homework, school and stress, I felt freedom in being outside and exploring new (and foreign) things like climbing walls, building a campfire, and sailing a boat. I made friends who I would have otherwise never met and relished the opportunity to both act like a kid and live independently like an adult.

According to a study by the American Camp Association, 96% of youth said camp helped them make new friends, 92% said camp helped them feel good about themselves, and 74% reported they did things at camp that they were afraid to do at first. Most of us don’t need to be shown these statistics to know how powerful the camp experience can be. We know what it feels like to face challenges and overcome them – like braving the heights of the Alpine Tower at Camp Mary Atkinson!

However, many families are challenged to provide this experience for their children.  Did you know that our Council incurs a cost of around $600 for every girl who attends one of our camps, but we only ask families to pay an average of $250? We subsidize the cost to keep camp affordable, but for some, it is not enough.

Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines is committed to making the camp experience accessible to all girls who want it, regardless of their socio-economic background or family financial situation. Each year in the spring we ask our Girl Scout Family to consider a gift to the Campership Fund, a fund that dispenses financial aid for girls to attend residential camp. This year, we have a matching sponsor for this campaign thanks to the support of Great Outdoor Provision Company.

Stand with Great Outdoor Provision Company and show your support by making a gift today. We’ll track our progress on our Facebook Pagehelp us meet our goal of $8,000!

If you want to attend camp but are experiencing financial difficulties, find more information about applying for a campership on our website.

Partnering With Our Families

January 28, 2013

By: Laurel DeLuca, Fund Development/Family Partnership Specialist

Family Partnership is the way our Council raises critical funds to provide the Girl Scout Experience to all girls throughout our 41 counties.  Just a gift of $100 provides Girl Scout memberships to eight girls in our Girl Scout Community Outreach Program.  We need your help in giving all girls the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful world of Girl Scouting.  Each gift, no matter the size, will directly help our girl members and other girls who might otherwise not be able to participate.

FP PatchLast year, donors had the opportunity to win an iPad3 for the 2012-2013 Family Partnership Campaign.  We held a three month long contest where donors had to give $35 or more to be eligible to win the iPad.  The drawing took place January 7, 2013, and we announced Shannon Gamber as our winner!  Thank you to all who participated.

Good news- there are still some great incentives going on throughout the rest of the year for those of you who did not get the chance to participate in the iPad drawing.  Currently, we have reached 42% of this year’s Family Partnership Goal.  Give a gift of $35 or more you and will receive a Family Partnership Car Magnet showing your support of Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines.  In addition, if a troop donates $200 or more, each girl in the troop will receive a new Family Partnership Patch.

What can you do to help girls in our communities?  Please consider making your Family Partnership gift today and help make a lasting impact on a girl’s life.  DONATE TODAY
