The Best Part of Summer? Girl Scout Day Camp!September 23, 2013
By Tiffany S., GSNCCP Girl Board Member
My name is Tiffany and I’m one of the Girl Board Members for Girl Scouts – NC Coastal Pines. There are tons of things I could write about, but I want to tell you about an aspect of Girl Scouting that means a lot to me – Day camp!
Every kid longs for the end of school in June. The hot, sunny days. Playing ball. Laying on the beach soaking in some rays. Sounds like a perfect summer, right?
The one thing that comes to my mind about summer is that I get to attend day camp at Camp Mary Atkinson. I have been a day camper since 2004 and have loved every minute including meeting new friends, learning songs, and participating in swimming and archery. As I got older, I decided to become a program aide (PA), which is a teen Girl Scout who helps the unit leaders and staff during day camp. Attending day camp had been such a wonderful experience for me that I wanted to share it with the next generation of Girl Scouts!
This past summer I served as a PA for Johnston County Day Camp at Camp Mary Atkinson. The best part about being a PA is that I’m now a leader for younger girls and even though I’m a teen, the unit leaders treat me as an adult. I get to lead younger girls in camp songs and skits and still participate in camp activities like canoeing, making crafts and climbing the Alpine Tower. Day camp also gives me a chance to make new friends as well as to see old friends who may attend different schools.
Next year will be my last year as a PA. It will be a bittersweet end to a great Girl Scout experience. I will miss the girls, the sounds of laughter in the pool, s’mores and songs around the campfire. I will miss the squeals or shrieks from the first time climber on the Alpine Tower when she says she cannot continue because she’s too scared, but is proud to have reached the top. But I think the one thing I will miss most about day camp is the friendships I made there. Nothing compares to Johnston County Day Camp.
